Wenger considers move for defender Alex
Arsenal are lining up a cut-price deal for Chelsea defender Alex after the Brazilian was placed on the transfer list at Stamford Bridge, according to reports. Alex put in a transfer request after falling out of favour with Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas. The request was accepted and Alex, along with striker Nicolas Anelka, has been removed from the first team squad by the Chelsea boss. The Brazilian defender is wanted by Juventus as well as the Gunners, but Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger made two inquiries in the summer for the defender and was rebuffed both times.
Wenger is a huge fan of the 29 year old and with Alex now transfer listed, the Gunners boss believes he can bring Alex in on a cut-price deal. Arsenal are eager to strengthen their defence after recent shaky performances from Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny. Belgian defender Thomas Vermaelen may have to revert to left back due to the injuries to Andre Santos and Kieran Gibbs, so Wenger is looking for a top-drawer replacement. The Brazilian defender was a starter for Chelsea before the arrival of compatriot David Luiz. Many have claimed that Alex is a much better defender than Luiz, but Villas-Boas is content with Luiz’s performances and Alex has been moved into the shade.
