New bid for Modric

Chelsea submitted an improved bid of £27m for Luka Modric last night as they tried to force through the signing of the unhappy Tottenham Hotspur midfielder. The offer is a £5m increase on Chelsea's opening bid, which was flatly rejected by Spurs last month, prompting Modric to tell the media that he wanted to quit White Hart Lane and move across London. That resolve has hardened in the intervening weeks with Modric now expected to submit a transfer request in response to Chelsea’s latest offer, insisting he wants to leave. There also remains apparent interest in him from Manchester United, although fresh links with Wesley Sneijder may see Fergie's attention diverted, but Modric wants to remain in the capital, where his family is settled. Relations between the Croat and chairman Daniel Levy have deteriorated since the pair met last week after the player returned to pre-season training to restate his desire to leave.
